  • Fire!

Friday morning I headed to the field to start combining just like I've been doing for the last while. I was expecting it to be just another ordinary boring day. Well, it was far from boring. I was driving my combine around and around the field, doing what I'm paid to do. Dan, who is my truck driver, was riding with me because he doesn't have much to do in between unloading the combine. It was a good thing, too. We smelled some smoke and so Dan said to stop at the corner and he was going to check it out. Right when we stopped he saw that some of the junk on the feeder house was smoldering. He quickly hopped out of the combine and kicked the smoldering stuff off. While he did that I started driving the combine out of the field. Dan called Larry on the radio and by then we realized that the field was on fire. Dan hurried to go get the seed trucks out of the field and I continued to drive the combine down a narrow gravel lane. I was glad Dan was there to tell me what to do cause I don't know if I would have known what to do otherwise. I had to pull off to the side several times because of all the fire trucks racing towards the fire. It didn't take them long to get the fire put out and soon the fire trucks left. Thankfully it mostly just burned up straw and it didn't get much seed or the combine. After words they were trying to figure out what started the fire. They couldn't figure it out for quite a while. Finally they found a piece of concrete that the combine had picked up in the field. They figure that it caused sparks which caused the fire. It was really weird cause during the whole episode I was pretty calm and everything. Later, when Larry, my boss, brought drinks for us all and we were just standing around talking, thats when I got all shaky. So then they got the combine running again and everyone watched me as I combined one row to make sure that the combine was working properly. Then everyone left except for me and Dan and we were supposed to keep working. I was hopping we would get off early cause I was really tired but we didn't. After supper Dan left to go work in the warehouse and I was left all alone in the field to work. Let's just say that my imagination was playing all sorts of tricks on me and I kept smelling smoke because of the burnt part of the field. But everything went well and no more fires started. I think that was enough excitement to last me for a long time. I'll leave you with a picture of the field. I couldn't get all of the burnt patch into the picture but it shows most of it.100_2902
